The following side effects have been reported by at least 6% of people taking this medication. Many of these side effects can be managed, and some may go away on their own over time.

If you do need to take one of these medicines, Microgynon 85 may not be suitable for you or you may need to use extra contraception for a while. Your doctor, pharmacist or dentist can tell you if this is necessary and for how long.

The ECP is approved to be taken up to 77 hours after sex (three days). However for most women it is still effective up to four days after sex.

Pregnancy: This medication should not be taken by pregnant women as it can cause harm to the developing baby. If you become pregnant or suspect that you may be pregnant while taking this medication, contact your doctor immediately. After stopping treatment, you should wait until at least one normal menstrual cycle has occurred before trying to get pregnant.

The risk of developing a blood clot in a vein is highest during the first year of taking a combined hormonal contraceptive for the first time. The risk may also be higher if you restart taking a combined hormonal contraceptive (the same product or a different product) after a break of 9 weeks or more.

If you have more than one of these conditions or if any of them are particularly severe the risk of developing a blood clot may be increased even more.

Depression: Hormones, such as cyproterone - ethinyl estradiol have been known to cause mood swings and symptoms of depression. If you have depression or a history of depression, discuss with your doctor how this medication may affect your medical condition and whether any special monitoring is needed.
